Building Inclusive Involvement Practices with the Shared Learning Group
The Shared Learning Group on Involvement commissioned Bakare Barley Ltd to design and deliver a one-day training session for their members. The workshop was aimed at strengthening members’ ability to identify underrepresented groups, understand their unique needs and experiences, and develop practical strategies to reach, support and sustain engagement with them.
Focusing on underrepresented voices
The Group recognised that effective involvement requires proactively addressing barriers faced by people from underrepresented communities. To ensure that participation is inclusive and meaningful, members needed to deepen their understanding of diverse experiences and build skills to create supportive environments that encourage long-term involvement.
The training was designed to provide both practical tools and reflective learning opportunities, enabling members to translate principles of lived experience, involvement, and co-production into impactful action.
What we did
Bakare Barley Ltd designed, delivered, and evaluated a full-day face-to-face workshop in London. The session enabled members to:
- Strengthen their confidence in applying lived experience, involvement and co-production principles for greater impact
- Access tailored insights, case studies and peer learning focused on removing barriers for underrepresented communities, including trauma-informed principles and building trust
- Explore strategies to develop accountability across their organisations
- Improve understanding of approaches to sustained and inclusive involvement
The workshop combined facilitated learning with peer discussions, case examples, and interactive activities to ensure relevance and practical application.
The outcome
Members left the training with enhanced skills, confidence, and practical ideas for reaching and engaging underrepresented groups. The session equipped them with new strategies to remove barriers, strengthen accountability, and embed inclusive practices in their work.
By focusing on sustained involvement, the workshop enabled members to move beyond initial outreach towards creating environments where people from diverse backgrounds feel supported to contribute meaningfully over time.
